Nike shoe brand : athletic to walking

American record-holder Steve Prefontaine became the first major track athlete to wear and endorse Nike brand shoes. Other stars with Nike included Olympian Jon Anderson, who won the Boston Marathon, and Ilie Nastase, who was ranked top in the professional tennis world.

Jimmy Connors won the Wimbledon and U.S. Open Championships wearing Nike shoes, not with an endorsement contract, but as a customer.

By 1979, Nike was the most popular running shoe to buy in the states. Nike sells more than shoes, they sell Nike apparel and sports equipment for most sports. Nike sells a specific shoe for each sport and activity.

Nike's biggest break was Michael Jordan, signed right out of the College. Even thought Michael Jordan was big, he wasn’t Nike’s first choice. Nike was looking for Larry Bird or Magic Johnson. Nike designed a shoe especially for Michael Jordan, called the Air Jordans. The Air Jordans where white, red and black. Black shoes were not allowed in the NBA. Because they were illegal in the NBA they were really popular. For every game Jordan wore the shoes he was fined $1000. An endorsement by Michael Jordan helped Nike take AIR JORDAN basketball shoes and apparel to the top.

Nike is partnering with the Australian Soccer Association, and will provide footwear & apparel to the national soccer teams, including both men's and women's teams. With 3 years and multimillions of dollars, the company is planning a strong push into soccer, with Australian sponsorship.

A statement, released by ASA Chief Executive John O'Neill said "ASA will continue to look at ways of capitalizing on commercial opportunities that will help us grow soccer within Australia, both at the elite level through all our national teams and via the burgeoning grassroots numbers, and with Nike now on board we can work closely together to further develop initiatives and programs to help us achieve our goals."

Nike Pacific Managing Director Tony Balfour said "This is an era of change which Nike is excited to be a part of, we have been keen to have an association with soccer in Australia due to our global commitment to the game and the enormous popularity of the sport at a grassroots level."

The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that the agreement may lead to other Nike clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United and Brazil playing touring games in Australia. Nike also sponsors teams in Brazil, England, Spain, Italy, Holland and Korea.

Walking starts from an athletic base. The evolution of the CrossTraining market, led by the Air Cross Trainer High shoe made it possible to buy Jordans cushioned enough for aerobics and running, but stable enough for indoor or outdoor court sports

Nike continues with its aggressive plan for international expansion through product excellence: still helping athletes run faster. Tiger Woods, the best golfer in the world wears Nike. Nike also supports Vince Carter, one of the most talented players of the NBA since Michael Jordan
